Wow! Sounds like the previous reviewer had a bad experience!

I’ve taken several series of these classes, both as a leader and a follower (no, it’s not the most comfortable place to lead as a woman, but hey, it’s the burbs, not San Francisco). The highlights are good energy, a mature and respectful crowd (mostly 35-up), the continuity of the series format (so you can build), and Tomaj’s ability to describe some technique tips that I hadn’t heard clarified before in many years of assorted classes. It’s also super helpful to have the separate beginner and intermediate classes rather than always starting at the beginning. Beginner really is beginner, intermediate really is a step up.

The downside is that to my taste, the routines in the intermediate class are too elaborate, really giving your brain a constant workout (and the follower gets rather whipped around) rather than getting you into the groove of building a solid set of social dancing moves. As a follower, I’d rather have a lead with even just 10 good moves than be constantly challenged and guessing and pushed to my limit. I’d like to see a little more emphasis on building a solid repertoire of moves. But these are minor quibbles. The good energy (it’s wholesome at the community center, but not a sterile fluorescent vibe), respectful crowd, critical mass, and insightful teaching tips make it worth it.

Tomaj is an arrogant person who tries to make people feel badly about themselves. I imagine he makes his money from marketing his DvD’s over his personality.
There are far better classes to take in the Bay area.
