We here at Salsa By The Bay are always looking to improve our site, and we’ve been hard at work on some new features! Here are some of the things we’ve been working on, in case you missed them:

Average Ratings

You’ve always had the ability to leave reviews, but now you can see what other people think about an event at a glance with the average star rating, right at the top of the event! This rating takes all the user reviews plus the editorial reviews for an event and averages them together, much like Yelp!

You can also see the new star ratings when you’re searching for events on Google:

Top Rated Events

Another related feature is the top rated events widget in the sidebar which shows the top 5 salsa events as rated by users of Salsa By The Bay:

Now you can find the top salsa events that are going on in the Bay Area, and support your favorite venues by leaving them a review. Leave a review today, and you could even win a free caricature.

Improved Search

Out site has really grown in the past year, to include not just salsa events but also News and information about Bay Area Salsa Teams, Instructors, and Djs. To help you find the information you’re looking for, we’ve improved the search bar in the upper-right corner of the site to give you better and more accurate results.

Salsa Training Teams Starting Up

Looking to improve your salsa dancing in the new year? As any good dancer will tell you, the only way to improve is through consistent practice, and one good way to do that is by joining a training team. Many of the Bay Area’s top salsa instructors and teams are starting up training teams soon. Here’s are the important dates you need to know:

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

On 1 Training Team Series – Want to learn how to improve your On1 dancing skills from the current reigning Salsa World Champions? Salsamania is starting an On1 training team starting January 31st which runs for 3 months, with practices every Tuesday and Thursday. The cost to join is $400 up until January 27th, after which the price jumps to $450.

Salsa Choreography & Performance Workshop – If you want to improve your choreography and stage presence, sign up for this 4-month long workshop from Ava Apple and Rodolfo Guzman, the directors of The Latin Symbolics. The cost is $250 if you sign up by February 15, or $300 at the door.

Other Training Teams

Montuno Dance Company in San Jose offers a beginner and intermediate training team every Monday, starting in January. The cost to join is $80 a month, with discounts available for students. Contact Isidro Corona for more information at montundanceco@gmail.com.

Also located in the South Bay, PB&G Dance Productions has a training team which meets every Tuesday in San Jose. Contact Ricardo Sanchez for details: sanchezre2006@gmail.com.

Margo Gaitan Arroyo

Margo is an instructor, choreographer, coach, performer and emcee and has been dancing salsa for over 10 years. She danced and performed with many teams, most notably Pretty Boys and Girls Dance Productions. She was a member turned coach of Rising Stars and Co-Director of High Maintenance. Margo has also performed at LA and SF Salsa Congresses and other events in the Bay Area.

She currently teaches classes, privates and provides coaching for Salsa Clara, Santa Clara University’s salsa team where she is the Assistant to the director, Danny Zepeda. She has emceed various events, including SF Salsa Congress and dance team socials. She is also the proprietor of Glam Dance Shoes, the only authorized Burju Shoes dealer in the Bay Area.

Salsa By The Bay Caricature Contest

Have you seen some of the cool salsa caricatures on our site? Do you want one of your own? Well here’s your chance!

Normally we only do caricatures for salsa instructors & djs, but since we’ve been getting a lot of requests to do caricatures, we’re holding a special contest where you can win your own FREE caricature!

How do you enter? Well, all you have to do is head on over to the Salsa Calendar and leave a review for your favorite events. Every review you leave is an entry for the contest (one review per event), so the more you leave, the greater your chances to win!

We’ll announce the winners for the contest 3 weeks from now on Friday, February 3rd 2012. The winner will receive a free caricature based on a photograph of their choice, as well as the option to be featured in the next edition of the Bay Area Salsa Map.

Ladies Styling Bootcamp

This special event is being offered by Salsamania’s resident divas, Liz and Andrew. The two-day workshop (1/21 -1/22) will teach styling techniques for use with spins, footwork and partnerwork, so that you can become a “diva on the dance floor!” Register early since the workshop is limited to the first 20 dancers.
